A Christian Response to Dignity, Creation, and Opportunity
In Sierra Leone, where waste often overwhelms communities and opportunities for young people can be limited, something remarkable is happening. What was once seen as a problem is becoming a source of possibility—and young people are leading the transformation.
Through the African Youth Digital Faith Influencers Program of the Pan-African Catholic Theology and Pastoral Network, youth are being equipped not only with skills, but with purpose.
They are learning to see their communities—and themselves—differently.
At the center of this work is the Empowering Youths Through Recycling Project, led by Samuel Eugene Kamara. What began as a response to growing environmental challenges has become something much greater: a pathway to dignity, livelihood, and hope.
Young participants are trained in practical skills such as carpentry, welding, and recycling. But more importantly, they are learning how to transform what is discarded into something of value. Materials once thrown away are now turned into furniture, household items, and metalwork—products that can be used, sold, and reinvested into their futures.
For many, this is not just training—it is a turning point. Some participants have already begun eearning income from their work, taking their first steps toward financial independence and stability.
What started as skill-building is becoming sustainable livelihood.
The impact extends beyond the workshop. These young leaders are bringing their knowledge into schools and communities, teaching others about environmental responsibility and responsible waste management. In doing so, they are helping to reshape attitudes, especially among younger generations, and contributing to a growing circular economy in Sierra Leone.
This work reflects a deeply Christian vision: that nothing—and no one—is without value. Just as discarded materials can be transformed, so too can lives. Through dignity of work, care for creation, and community engagement, these young people are living out a faith that restores and rebuilds.

During a recent gathering in Makeni, community members, diocesan representatives, and partners came together to witness what has been achieved.
It was more than a closing event—it was a recognition of lives already changing and a future beginning to take shape.

Each new participant represents not just one life changed, but a ripple effect through families and communities.
